Indianapolis Star Endorsement

After two strong terms as Indiana's secretary of state, Republican Todd Rokita is well prepared for the promotion to Congress.

However, as with others in what is likely to be a large freshman class of Republicans, Rokita needs to ensure that he doesn't indulge in the partisan games that often define Washington.

Rokita promises to fight for reduced federal spending, which must be a priority for a nation with a dangerously high ratio of debt to gross domestic product.

In this heavily Republican district, Democrats have fielded perennial candidate David Sanders, a Purdue University professor. Sanders has shown growth this year over his previous runs for Congress. But Rokita is clearly the stronger choice.

Libertarian John Duncan also is on the ballot.
